5 Easy DIY Recipes for Summer

Summer is officially here!  Summer brings travel, bugs, drinking, sun exposure, camping, hiking, heat, and lots of activity.

I've put together five easy and effective recipes for you so that you and your family can be supported this summer with the safest and best products.

After-Sun Spray

This cooling and soothing spray will be a staple in your beach and pool bag this summer.  After exposure to the sun, spray this on everyone in your family.  It is refreshing and will relieve discomfort if you overdo it in the sun.

Tip: Store this in your fridge for the most cooling effect after the sun.

You'll Need:

  • 1oz Spray bottle (feel free to update the recipe proportionately for any larger size spray bottle.)
  • 5 drops lavender essential oil
  • 3 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 1 teaspoon alcohol-free, unscented witch hazel
  • 1 Tablespoon aloe vera gel

Ingredients:

  1. Drop essential oils into bottle.
  2. Add witch hazel and swirl bottle around to incorporate.
  3. Add aloe vera gel.
  4. Top off with filtered or distilled water.

Bug Repellent Two Ways

Standard bug repellent is one of those products that is extremely toxic to us and our skin.  If you're traveling somewhere or know that bugs are carrying major disease, it might be worth the risk for you, but day-to-day summer bugs won't stand a chance to these repellents... and it actually smells great.  You can feel safe applying these as often as you'd like!

Note: This recipe is gentle enough to use for the whole family (children over 2 years only).

Option 1: Bug Spray

You'll need:

  • 1 oz spray bottle (scale up proportionately with larger bottle)
  • 5 drops lavender essential oil
  • 5 drops Purification essential oil
  • 5 drops frankincense essential oil
  • 5 drops peppermint essential oil
  • alcohol-free unscented witch hazel
  • distilled or filtered water

Steps:

  1. Drop essential oils into bottle.
  2. Fill spray bottle with equal parts water and witch hazel.
  3. Shake to combine and before each use.
  4. Spray preventively on skin, clothing, and hair.  You can also use this on pets!

Option 2: One drop on feet

You'll need:

  • Feet
  • 2 drops Purification essential oil

Steps:

  1. Add one drop of purification essential oil unto the bottom of each foot every day.  That's it! The oil gets into your system this way and changes the pheromones and your scent to the bugs.

I recommend doing both while you get going and then experiment with just the Purification!

Itch and Sting Be-Gone Roller

If you do get a bug bite or sting, this roller will help soothe right away.

Note: the recipe below is for adults.  You may use this on children ages 3-8 with half the amount of essential oils.

You'll Need:

  • 10ml roller bottle
  • 15 drops lavender essential oil
  • 15 drops Purification essential oil
  • 8 drops tea tree essential oil
  • liquid carrier oil of your choice

Steps:

  1. Drop essential oils into roller bottle.
  2. Filler remainder of the bottle with carrier oil and firmly push roller into bottle.
  3. Before each use, gently roll bottle between hands to mix.  Roll directly on itch or sting.
  4. Use as needed.

Don't have your roller on you?  Apply a drop of peppermint right to the bite/sting to soothe for the time being!

Muscle Soothing Roller

This is your go-to for spasms, head tension, sore muscles, or just after a workout or hike to prevent a pulled or sore muscle.  Keep this in your purse, gym bag, backpack, etc.

You'll need:

  • 10ml roller bottle
  • 6 drops Panaway essential oil
  • 7 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 6 drops lavender essential oil
  • 5 drops copaiba
  • Liquid carrier oil of your choice

Make it your own variations (all supportive for pain and inflammation): Lemongrass, black pepper, and basil.  You may also layer copaiba on top of the oils you roll on at once as copaiba has a magnifying effect, which amps up the effects of your other oils.

Steps:

  1. Drop essential oils into roller bottle.
  2. Fill the remainder of bottle with carrier oil.
  3. Gently roll between hands before each use to re-mix oils.
  4. Roll onto any area that needs muscle soothing and then massage into the muscle for 1-2 minutes.
  5. Reapply as needed.
