Food, Parenting, and Unschooling with Deena Barselah

In this episode Deena’s connection between food, parenting and unschooling was fantastic. She had me re-examine my ideas around food, snacks, mealtime and what I model for my family. She asks “Are the rules or expectations around food truly ours? Do they apply to who you are or are they prescriptive ideas that we have taken?” We also tackled some of those food topics that seem to be regular sore spots for parents:

  • Snacking

  • Dinner time

  • Meal Planning

  • The pressure of the “well rounded meal”

  • Picky Eaters

  • Candy and Treats

  • Halloween

Deena leaves us with actionable tips and thoughtful questions that help us reframe unrealistic expectations we may be holding on to around food.

Finding Joy With Food with Deena Barselah

Today I’m having a conversation around food and diet culture that I hope starts to make its way into the wellness space.  Deena is a guiding light when it comes to holistic-centered eating. She shares how her own journey with disordered eating and how it led her down the path to helping other women.

She is a rock star in the nutrition space and believes every family needs to create for themselves what works for their unique family and that you can let go of the "should's" that are stressing you out in the kitchen.

Deena underlines the importance of staying attuned to your body as differing opinions are thrown from every direction.  But, in reality,  in order to really understand what our bodies need, we have to learn how to hear our body above all the outside noise.

Eating Mindfully with Deena Barselah

The human body needs food for fuel, nourishment and sustaining life itself. But food is so much more than a biological necessity. It brings comfort, helps us bond and build connections, share experiences and create memories. That’s why it’s important to instill a positive relationship with food not only for yourself but your entire family. Deena Barselah is a wellness coach who joins podcast host Dina Wizmur in an open conversation about how to approach food mindfully. She provides tips for simplifying how you’re eating and creating an atmosphere that is friendly and approachable when dining.

Topics Discussed:

  • Diet Culture: 80’s vs. Present Day

  • Food and mood: How foods affect how you feel

  • Building a healthy relationship with food for you and your family

  • Food environment and ambiance matters

  • Engage your children in the food making process

  • Preparing food vs. eating food

Want a joyful, connected relationship with food?

From Fran: I chat to Deena Barselah about the minefield that has become our relationships with food and feeding our children.

I love Deena’s approach, and in this chat I spoke to her about how to process our own relationships with food, how to not project them onto our children, as well as about diet culture, anti-fat bias, whether food is really neutral and how to partner with our children around food.

I am ALL for making food a joyful and connected experience, rather than one full of restriction, arbitrary rules and moral judgments! Who isn’t?
